When should my baby start solids?

One of the most common questions we get asked, 'When should my baby start solids'. There is quite some conjecture and confusion around this question. The World Health Organisation says 6 months....and we agree. There are a number of health professionals who say it's best to start at 4 months...we strongly disagree....and here's why.

There are 3 key reasons for this stance.

  1. No babies can sit unaided at 4 months
  2. Very few babies have teeth at 4 months
  3. The Juvenile Suck/Swallow reflex which pushes the tongue forward to aid in suckling, does not integrate (pushing the tongue backwards) until at least 6 months.

Please feel free to discuss your concerns around feeding age with the team at balance.
